چکیده

Prior work has established the importance of degree of internationalization for understanding the performance of multinational enterprises. Despite all efforts, however, the relationship between degree of internationalization and firm performance (I-P) is still the subject of ongoing debate following inconclusive findings. We suggest that the international business literature has largely overlooked MNE cultural diversity as an essential determinant of the I-P relationship. We argue that the impact of the degree of internationalization on MNE performance is contingent on MNE cultural diversity. The impact of the degree of internationalization on performance is positive for MNEs that operate in culturally similar countries and negative for MNEs that operate in culturally diverse countries. Our study is among the first to examine the impact of MNE cultural diversity on the I-P relationship with a unique panel dataset from European multinationals. The results provide convincing support for our approach to the study of the degree of internationalization and MNE performance. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. * Corresponding author. Multinational Enterprises in Dissimilar Cultural Contexts: the Role of Global Virtual Teams

Multinational Enterprises face major impediments to transferring firm specific advantages within the MNE network given their relatively low capacity to absorb knowledge from other internationally dispersed units. Additionally, because MNE units are located in two (or more) distinct nations, the effectiveness of crossborder transfer of organizational knowledge is profoundly affected by the cultu...

MNE subsidiaries’ outsourcing and insourcing of R&D: The role of local institutions

Plain language summary: The rules for business vary not only between countries, but within countries. Subsidiaries of multinational enterprises (MNEs) thus have to consider both the national level and the local context when designing their business practices. To examine this impact, we study R&D outsourcing in four Eastern member states of the European Union, and find that local R&D outsourcing...

The research provides abundant empirical support to the view that F&B MNEs operate on a worldwide scale and although their share of foreign to to...

Winfried Ruigrok/Hardy Wagner/Wolfgang Amann

Researchers have typically searched for and postulated a universalistic form of the internationalization-performance relationship. In this study, we evaluate the validity of this ‘grande theory’ logic by investigating 80 Swiss multinational companies in manufacturing industries over the 5-year period 1998-2002. Our findings suggest that the form of the internationalization-performance relations...

Differential Diffusion of Information Systems Technology in Multinational Enterprises: A Research Model

Recorded evidence suggests that information systems technology (IST) can be harnessed at least at a national level to create favorable market asymmetries leading to competitive advantage for the firm. Diffusion of IST over worldwide divisions of a multinational enterprise (MNE) and its ramifications, however, pose a more complex scenario. Economic analyses have been shown to be insufficient to ...
